IMPORTANT POINTS:

  •  These Modal Auxiliaries do not have singular and plural forms where as Be forms, Possessive forms and Do forms contain them. These forms are like this:
                                                       Singular                           Plural

'Be' forms                                      Am, is, was                  Are, were
'Possessive' forms                          Has                             Have
'Do' forms                                      Does                            Do

The rest of Helping Verbs like 'had, 'did' and thirteen Modal Auxiliaries are used as both singular and plural forms.

Here why we have to consider which verbs are singular and which verbs are plural means these verbs agree with the forms of Subjective and Objectives means Nouns and Pronouns.

That means we use singular verbs when the subject or object is singular and we must use the plural verbs when subject or object is plural.

NOTE:  As we take the Nouns and Pronouns as Sub / Obj we must know the form of them. They are as follows:

FORMS OF PRONOUNS: Pronouns point of view they are divided into 3 persons. They are called

1st person           2nd person            3rd person

1st Person:
  • When the speaker address himself, he says 'I', this is singular.

  • When the speaker addresses himself including with some other people having related to them, he says 'we', this is plural. So I, We are 1st person.
NOTE:  Regarding to usage of the Helping Verbs 'am' only this 'I' is considered as singular. In all the rest of cases 'I' is considered as plural form.

2nd Person:  The listener is addressed by speaker with 'you', even the listener is one person or more than one person, the speaker addresses with 'you' only. But we must remember that the 2nd person 'you' is always considered as plural. So, we must use the plural verbs for it.

3rd Person:  When speaker and listener talks about some other person or
thing or place in their presence or absence, they are called 3rd person.

Regarding 3rd person 'He, She, It are Singular. "They" is plural.

Particularly 'He, She, It are considered according to the gender of Nouns.

NOTE: Please see the Reflexive Pronouns in the previous topics for the detailed study of "Gender".

                                                   Singular                              Plural

1st person                                    I                                     We
2nd person                                                                          You
3rd person                                    He, She, It                       They

IMPORTANT POINTS:  These persons are changed according to the person
                                  who speaks.

Observing the forms of Pronouns we can come to know that the singular and plural forms of Helping Verbs are used as follows.

Am --->  is used for 'I'

Is, was, does and has -- > are used for 'He, She, It.

Are, were, do, have ----> are used for 'You, We, They' and the verbs like 'Had, Did, and 13 Modal Auxiliaries are used for all 3rd persons like I, We, You, He, She, It, They.
