DEFINITION OF NOUN AND KINDS OF NOUNS

NOUNS




     Nouns are the words which denote the names of people, things and places etc.

Ex: KRISHNA, LAKSHMI, VIJAYAWADA, TIGER, CITY, COUNTRY, CARROT, LABBIPET, AGRA, CHAIR, GOLD, BOOK etc.
















Nouns are mainly 5 kinds

They are:

 1. PROPER NOUN:  Proper Nouns are the words which denote the particular 
                             names of things, persons, places, rivers, mountains,                                                      languages, oceans etc.

Ex: 

1. RAMA, KIRAN, LAKSHMI, ABDUL KALAM, DHONI, ADAMS, ANNAPURNA,   
    MODI, SMITH, JERCY .

2. INDIA, AMERICA, AUSTRALIA, ANDHRA PRADESH, IRAQ, RUSSIA, PAKISTAN.

3. GODAVARI, MISSISSIPPI, GANGA, YAMUNA, KAVERI.

4. INDIAN OCEAN, BAY OF BENGAL, ARABIAN SEA, PACIFIC OCEAN.

5. ASIA, AFRICA, EUROPE, NORTH AMERICA etc.

6. FORD, INDICA, GILLETTE, TITAN, FAST TRACK, SAMSUNG MOBILE, NANDI 
     PIPES etc.

7. TELUGU, HINDI, FRENCH, SPANISH, ENGLISH etc.

8. EVEREST, KANCHAN GANGA, VINDHYA, NEELIGIRI, SESHADRI HILLS etc.



NOTE
  •  These Proper Nouns do not have plural forms.
  •  We should not use "Articles" before these which denote the names of a tribe or sects in common. 

2. COLLECTIVE NOUNS:  These are the words which denote the names of a 
                                      group of people, things, places and animals etc.

Ex: Bunch, Army (Soldiers), Constellation (stars), Swarm (ants, bees, flies), Flock (Sheep), Cattle (Cow, buffaloes), Fleet (Ships), Crowd, Mob (people), Reel (paper), Pipe (cloths), Crew (sailors), Clump (trees), Team (plays, dances), Ministry (ministers), Bouquet (flowers), Band (musicians) etc.

 
3. MATERIAL NOUNS:  These are the words which denote the names of 
                                  Materials that are liquid and solid.

Ex:  Milk, Iron, Gold, Oil, Mercury, Coal, Wood, Silver, Petrol, Glass, Wool, Cooper, Stone, Paper, Cotton, Cement, Clay, Water etc.


4. ABSTRACT NOUNS:  These are words which denote the names of our Feelings and Qualities etc., which we can not see and touch them.

These are generally formed with the suffixes like '-ness', '-ty', '-ence', 'ism'.

Ex:  
Kindness, Brightness, Darkness, Selfishness, Awareness, Greediness, Greatness, Richness, Easiness, Dimness, Thickness.

Cruelty, Prosperity, Generosity, Difficulty, Beauty, Poverty, Pity, Honesty.

Intelligence, Patience, Impatience.

Egoism, Heroism, Idealism.

Air, God, Death, Wisdom, Knowledge, Power, Liberty, Freedom, Nature, Jealous etc.

NOTE:  These nouns also do not have plural form.













5. COMPOUND NOUNS:  These are the words which are formed by two or 
                                    more words. Generally these are formed with 
                                     Prepositions and the Participle forms of Main Verbs.

Ex: 
1. With Prepositions:  passer-by, Son-in-law, Daughter-in-law, Mother-in-law, 
     Commander-in-chief.

2. With Past Participle:  Broken Chair, Given Money, Said Words, 
    Written Notes.

3. With Present Participle:  Playing Cricket, Collecting Stamps, Telling-lies, 
    Eating Sweets and Smoking-Cigarettes etc.


NOTE:  Adjectives are formed through Abstract Nouns and Compound Nouns 
           also. We can know about this in detail in the chapter of Degrees of
